Outfit Style Guide for Family Pictures
Sometimes choosing the perfect outfit for your family can be just as challenging and sometimes It can seem overwhelming when considering what to wear but it doesn’t need to be. Remember outfits can really impact how your photos look!! You want to love the clothes you’re wearing, but you also want them to appear timeless. These ideas are to be used as a guide, it doesn't mean you need to follow them exactly - maybe you have similar pieces in your closet already. It's all about pairing light neutrals with a hint of color (usually a muted pastel color, think: light, rose-y pink, soft olive greens, light blues).
I will give you some tips to help you pick out the perfect outfits for you and your family.
Pick the lead out. Sometimes someone has a particular outfit that they want to wear (usually moms or daughters), so let that outfit lead the rest ones. For example, Find a pretty floral print that you love for yourself or your daughter (I only suggest one floral print) so look at the colors in that dress and build from there and complete the family outfit. For dads and sons I usually recommend sticking to very classic, neutrals such as white henley or button downs and a pair of khakis or light gray pants.
Say no to characters. Your littles may love their super hero shirt but you may want to skip it for th family photo session.
Limit patterns. Too many patterns, can make your photo look too busy as it may distract the final image.
Avoid all white or all black clothing. Give some color to your outfits. Another reason to avoid white is because it is very easy to blow out parts of your shirt causing it to lose its detail if the sun is shining brightly on it. Same can be said with all black, it’s easy to have clipping on black clothing and the detail is lost. With clipping, this is where the black clothes loose the depth and details. Trust me you don’t want this and neither does your photographer.
Coordinating colors not matching. Pick the color palette t and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme.
In Spring, Fall and Winter season you can add layers to your outfits. Layers photograph really nice and it also helps incase the weather turns out to be cooler than expected. Layers like cardigans, jackets, vests are the perfect finishing touch! Don’t forget accessories like bowties, hats, headbands, and cute shoes! They are so much important to add something fun in your pictures.
In fall, the leaves are changing and the sun is softer consider choosing outfits with warm earth tones. In a green frame as our beautiful parks earth tones are a no brainer!!!
